Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences

The Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) is a leading centre for research and training focussed on drug and vaccine design, discovery, development and use. Bringing together the former departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacology & Physiology, Immunology and Bioscience (microbiology and biochemistry), the Institute contributes substantially to the generation of new knowledge and the discovery and development of medicines to improve treatment of major health conditions, including cardiovascular, psychiatric, inflammatory and infectious diseases. Combining fundamental and applied research, the Institute builds on Strathclyde's record of success in drug and vaccine research and in engaging with industry to ensure our excellent fundamental research is translated into products that benefit patients. The major strategic vision behind the formation of SIPBS was to create an integrated research and teaching center for drug and vaccine discovery, development and delivery underpinned by a pharmaceutical focus in pharmacology, integrative biology, immunology and microbiology. We considered that modern pharmaceutical science is ideally served by dovetailing with experimental biology at the molecular, cellular and integrative level such that research findings in these areas may inform chemical design and optimization of drug formulation and delivery. The formation of the Institute has also enabled the integration and co-ordination of the multidisciplinary expertise of its members to meet research agendas in the UK, EU and internationally and to fully exploit new developments in genome and proteome research for drug and vaccine discovery in the 21st Century. The excellent research environment and infrastructure of postdoctoral scientists and academics supports an extensive PhD training program co-ordinated by the Graduate School. The popular MRes degree acts as a feed to these three year program. The Institute offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate instructional programs. As the School of Pharmacy, the Institute delivers the flagship MPharm undergraduate pharmacy degree. Postgraduate MSc degrees cover Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutical Quality and Good Manufacturing Practice, Food Biotechnology and Food Science & Microbiology, both on campus and delivered as distance learning.
