Optoelectronics Research Centre

ORC is a non-profit research organisation, which emerged from the Department of Physics of Tampere University of Technology in 1999. With a total investment in equipment of more than 18 million euros and 65 employees ORC is one of the best equipped research units in Finland. Its core competence lies in compound semiconductor technology, in particular molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for the fabrication of GaAs, InP, and GaSb devices, nanotechnology, and ultra-fast optics. ORC has complete optoelectronic device processing and characterization facilities set up in clean rooms of class 100 and 1000. It is currently running 21 national and international research projects in cooperation with about 50 universities and companies throughout the world. ORC has been exceptionally successful in transferring research results, technologies, and innovations to industry and played a seminal role in the creation of the Finnish optoelectronics industry (there are 5 companies active in the field of semiconductor and ultrafast fibre lasers that spun-out from ORC). During the last five years ORC has been involved in 6 international research projects financed by the European Commission and has coordinated 3 of these projects; two of the projects were directly concerned with the development of semiconductor laser diodes for telecomm and datacomm applications.
Prof. Oleg Okhotnikov, D.Sc. (1992), Ph.D. (1981) from Russian Academy of Sciences both in Laser Physics, is the head of the Ultrafast and Intense Optics (UIO) laboratory of ORC. His experimental background includes mode-locked and single-frequency tuneable semiconductor and fibre lasers. He has a substantial experience in advanced diode-pumped ultrafast fibre lasers and amplifiers, spectroscopy of rare-earth laser materials, and novel laser concepts such as semiconductor disc lasers. He has published more than 200 journal papers and 180 conference presentations and holds 6 patents. During the last five years, Prof. Okhotnikov has coordinated 8 national research projects and two EU research project.
