The Solid State Theory Group covers a wide range of research areas in condensed matter theory and computational materials science. A vital part of our research are computationally demanding first-principles calculations of atomic structures, thermodynamic potentials, band structures, and dielectric properties as well as first-principles lattice dynamics. Thereby we focus on various group IV, IV-IV, and III-V materials including their nanostructures and surfaces. The computational methods are combined with many-body theories in order to account for the excitation aspects, in particular in optical studies. Increasing activities concern biomolecules and organic functionalization of solid substrates. Another part of our research concerns excitons in low-dimensional systems, where the reduced dimensionality is either the result of structural confinement or is due to external fields, as well as the exciton-phonon interaction in systems with huge coupling constants.
