IBEC - Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia

IBEC

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) started its activities in 2006.

With a distinctive interdisciplinary profile, IBEC brings together world-class physicists, chemists and biomedical researchers along with engineer specialists, working together towards a common goal: the development of breakthrough technologies to advance healthcare and life sciences. IBEC contributes to making a better quality of life and to generating wealth, through its technology transfer activities to hospitals and industry.

IBEC hosts currently 14 research groups, organised into 6 research programmes, which range from cellular biotechnology to robotics. The Institute roadmap aims for a size of 30 groups and 400 researchers in 2013. IBECĀ“s best asset is an international (> 20 nationalities), young (3/4 staff under 35), and talented workforce (with an increasing record of publications in top journals and a first spin off company created in 2008).

Nanomedicine is a strategic axis connecting most of them, fuelled by the Nanobioengineering research programme, within which, the Nanobiophotonics group, contact in the NoE PHOTONICS4LIFE, is an essential contributor. Based at the Barcelona Science Park, the IBEC scientists have access to the state-of-the-art Nanotechnology Platform core facilities.
