International Projects

The network Photonics4Life links together Biophotonics research groups in Europe. On a scientific level this is also done by joint research projects, the “P4L Projects”. These are research projects, which are conducted by at least two groups from different Photonics4Life partners which combine their already ongoing research. The projects enable the partners to focus on their core expertise, but simultaneously add complimentary knowledge and resources from the network. This also includes the exchange of the best scientists. Due to this cross-fertilization cutting-edge scientific output can already be expected within a period of one to two years only.

Special preference is given to interdisciplinary projects to promote the breaking down of barriers between the different disciplines working in the field of Biophotonics. At the middle of this year the first ten P4L-projects were granted and initialized. These can be roughly categorized in 4 topics, namely cancer research, biochips, new multifunctional or multimodal approaches and pharmaceutics research.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
