New optics and photonics society in Portugal announces conference

The recently established Portuguese Optics and Photonics Society (SPOF) will present a new photonics meeting next spring in Portugal. The International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics (AOP 2011) will be held at the Univ. of Minho in Braga, Portugal, 3-7 May. SPIE and P4L members like Hugo Thienpont (Vrije Univ. Brussel) will be among the event's international steering committee.
"We are looking forward to welcoming our colleagues from around the world to our modern 20-centuries old town of Braga, to share recent advances and future perspectives in all fields of optics and photonics," said AOP 2011 Chair and SPOF President Manuel Filipe Costa (Univ. do Minho). An important goal for SPOF is to establish new mutually beneficial cooperative relationships, “which in this wide field are of utmost importance to a continuous development" he said.

In addition to SPIE and SPOF, the conference is endorsed by the International Commission for Optics (ICO), European Optical Society (EOS), Sociedad Española de Óptica (SEDOPTICA), Reunión Iberoamerican de Óptica (RIAO), Academia Mexicana de Óptica, Optics and Photonics Society of Singapore (OPSS), and HCSI.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
