European Call for Proposals in Biophotonics to be published on 1st October 2012

BiophotonicsPlus is a joint initiative of the seven European countries and regions to stimulate and fund R&D projects which will translate existing biophotonic technologies and methods into appliances and put them into clinical, medical or industrial practice.

To this end, up to 15 million EUR government grants will be awarded to innovative project proposals under the BiophotonicsPlus European Competition for Collaborative R&D Funding which will open on the 1st October 2012 (publication date of the call for project proposals). Detailed information will be available on the call website www.BiophotonicsPlus.eu from that date on.

Already today, the website provides basic information on the tentative call timeline, events and contact details as well as a project partner search facility where interested parties can search for project partners and post a profile to present their expertise, research interests and/or project idea.

The competition will be open to participants from the participating countries and regions: Germany, the Tuscany region, Israel, the UK, the Flanders region, the Catalonia region and Latvia. Eligible proposals need to involve participants from at least two of these countries and regions.

The competition is supported by the European Commission, DG CONNECT.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
