Best Biophotonics Poster

In the frame of the Photonics Europe subconference, "Biophotonics: Photonic Solutions for Better Health Care", the prize for the best poster presentation was devided between two students: Edgars Kviesis-Kipge from the University of Latvia won half of the prize for his poster "Miniature wireless photoplethysmography devices: integration in garments and test measurements". The other half went to Anuradha A. Ramoji from the Universit├Ątsklinikum Jena for "Characterization and differentiation of leukocyte sub populations in blood using micro-Raman spectroscopy". The award was handed over following the poster session by Dennis Matthews, UC Davis and J├╝rgen Popp, IPHT Jena, University of Jena on Wednesday in the exhibition hall. Along with the certificate both of the students received a book token for 250 Euros, which was sponsored by the Journal of Biophotonics and Wiley-VCH Publisher.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
