The University of Oulu is an international science community, whose core strength lies in osmo.hormioulu.fi multidisciplinary basic research and high-quality education based on it. Although its academic offerings span over 70 disciplines, the university’s concentrated research policy channels the efforts of researchers into three focus areas: Information Technology and Wireless Communications, Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine as well as Northern and Environmental Issues. Its tasks include promoting free research, education and culture and strengthening the national competence base to improve competitiveness and well-being. In addition, the university strives to ensure the availability of a well-qualified academic labour force and researcher base. Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is among the largest in Finland and has an exceptionally wide scientific base. In its activities, the university draws on the quality and breadth of its scientific programmes, state-of-the-art research and educational technology, close ties with business and industry and strong enterprise agenda, not to mention its contact network involving hundreds of national and international scientific and educational institutes and organizations.
The Chemistry Department of the University of Oulu has focused its teaching and research on materials chemistry and green chemistry. Materials chemistry combines molecular nanotechnology, catalysts, light-emitting microstructures and their computational studies. Green chemistry aims to create tomorrow's environmentally-friendly growth.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
