Institute of Photonic Technology

The Vision of the IPHT is “Harnessing light carries beyond limits”. There exists a very close collaboration between the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) and the Friedrich Schiller-University Jena (FSU), since leading scientists of the IPHT are faculty at the Uni Jena. Most importantly, the coordinator, Prof. Popp embodies the direct link between the two institutions since he is both scientific director of the IPHT and director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry (IPC). Since Prof. Popp‟s research efforts at the IPHT and the IPC are mainly focused towards the development and application of innovative photonic techniques the organizational entangling of both institutions is constantly increasing. This process is e.g.demonstrated by the junior research group within the framework of the Jenaer BioChip Initiative (JBCI) which was formed in 2006 and is affiliated with the IPC and located at the IPHT. Thus in the follwing besides a description of the IPHT also the IPC will be introduced in detail.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
