The research conducted in our group is focused on two main areas – fiber optic biosensors and investigation of optical properties of biological tissues.

Developed fiber optic biosensors are based on a broad range of sensing principles – interferometry, spectrometry, polarimetry and intensity. The sensors can measure several important parameters – from temperature and refractive index, to blood hematocrit level.The issues at the focus of our research are mainly whole blood and skin tissues. The research is conducted using several techniques, such as low-coherence interferometry, optical coherence tomography, Raman spectroscopy and microscopy as well as colorimetry and spectroscopy.

Our group also explores also the use of boron-doped diamond for applications in optical biosensing and bioelectronics including various aspects of material preparation and characterization, advanced semiconductor technology, surface modification and surface biofunctionalization.

Round Robin Experiment

Raman spectroscopy has already proved its effectiveness in many cases for medical diagnostics such as for cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infections. However, there are no standards in the different working groups, e.g. for sample preparation, implementation of the Raman experiments, spectra pre-treatment, data evaluation, etc.In a round robin experiment, the required groundwork will take place in order to define standardised Raman measurement methods, which will be fundamental for establishing Raman spectroscopy for clinical diagnostic procedures.
